Happy Birthday Lamar Hunt

On August 2nd, 1932 Lamar Hunt was born in El Dorado, Arkansas. If not for this man the face of sports in this country would be very different. Take a few minutes to read about the founder of The Columbus Crew (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamar_Hunt). Thanks for everything you did for soccer in this country and specifically Columbus.

Website Update; Houston Home Match Saturday

First, wanted to let everyone know that updates have been very slow on the website as we've been having some issues after migrating the site to a new webhost. We think we've almost got them all fixed, but if you see some changes or some things looking not quite right that's probably why. Second, stop by the Crew Union tailgate Saturday as the old guys (as I like to call them) are cooking up smoked chicken, corn on the cob and baked beans for everyone. All are welcome to stop by and grab some food share a beverage or two with your friends and get ready for the match against Houston. If people want to bring other things that would be great (ie. chips desserts other sides whatever). See ya all there.

A Statement on the Recent Fallout at Claddagh

For those of you that don't know already we had a hugely succesful Columbus Brigade viewing party Saturday that over 2,500 people showed up for at Claddagh for the US-England match. Craig McConville and his staff put together a great event and other than some long beer lines everyone we've talked to had a good time. The evening took a sour turn however as you can read about in the linked article which we highly encourage you to read.

We're hopefull the situation can be rectified somehow because this was the perfect situation and I say that from my individual perspective and that of one of the leaders of Crew Union. We've been getting questions about wha CSU is planning to do now and I can honestly tell you we don't know right now. We're considering all our options, both long term and short term. With no away Crew game's till July 10 (four weeks away) we
have some flexibility.

All that being said, Craig and the rest of the staff have our full support. They consistently went above and beyond for us and that shined through during the great viewing party thrown on Saturday.

We're so close now! The 2010 FIFA World Cup is about to kick off in
South Africa and I'm sure you're as pumped as we are! There will be a
lot of places showing the matches, but trust me, if you're in Columbus
you're going to want to be at Claddagh in the Brewery District. They're
pulling out all the stops, especially for US-England this Saturday.
They'll be showing the match on a 10ft x 14ft LED television outside in
the courtyard! Check out all the info below.

Quick note for those in Indianapolis: head down to Radio Radio on Fountain Square (http://www.futureshock.net/)
to watch the US-England match with Massive317.

Hunt Sports Group Seeking Local Investors for Crew

Nothing overly surprising, but some interesting news coming from Hunt Sports Group today (http://www.thecrew.com/news/2010/06/hsg-seek-additional-minority-investment):

Chairman Clark Hunt announced today that Hunt Sports Group plans to
pursue additional minority investment in the Columbus Crew. HSG has
retained Western Reserve Partners LLC, an investment banking firm based
in Cleveland, as its exclusive financial advisor in the process.

	For
the first time since the Crew was founded prior to the inaugural 1996
season, HSG is seeking new local investors in the franchise to further
enhance the club’s regional profile in central Ohio and statewide. Hunt
said that HSG will pursue investors who share his family’s passion for
soccer and commitment to seeing the sport grow and flourish in central
Ohio, as well as HSG’s long-term investment philosophy.

	“It has
always been important to our family for the Crew to have a strong group
of Ohio-based investors with close ties to the regional community,” Hunt
said. “With the Crew’s success, the tremendous growth of MLS and the
continued new investment in the league, we feel the time is right to
pursue additional minority investors who share our vision for the
	long-term success of the franchise.”

	Hunt said HSG selected
Western Reserve Partners in part because of the firm’s successful track
record and close relationships with business leaders in Columbus and
	throughout the state.

The Columbus Dispatch has additional details (http://www.crewxtra.com/live/content/sports/stories/2010/06/02/crew-hunting-for-local-investors.html?sid=101). Now what does this mean for supporters? Right now, not much. Down the road we'll see.

The Crew suffered their first loss of the season Saturday, but at least
the pregame tailgate was massive. Thanks to everyone that came out and
to those that helped contribute all the food and beverages we had. Sam
Fahmi got
some great shots of the tailgate (and the match too!) (http://massivereport.com/category/image-galleries/05292010-columbus-crew-vs-la-galaxy) for
MassiveReport.com that are always worth checking out.

This week the Crew go out west for two matches before taking a break for
the World Cup. We'll be having viewing parties as usual at Claddagh
for both matches, 10pm Wednesday against San Jose and 9pm Saturday
against Colorado (both games on ONN). You can also come out early
Saturday morning to watch the US take on Australia (8:30am on ESPN2) in
thier last warm-up before taking on England June 12 in the World Cup.

We'll have some more details next week on all the festivities going on
for the world cup including a special Columbus Brigade scarf we'll have
available at Claddagh during the cup.

Isn't it great to be a Crew fan? A very enjoyable nine points in nine
days sees The Crew on top of the east with a big match this weekend
against LA. If you need tickets you need to let us know ASAP as the
Nordecke will sell out before Saturday. Don't wait to get tickets, email
Kevin (kmmc@crewunion.com) or purchase them through our online store (index.php?option=com_virtuemart page=shop.browse category_id=3 Itemid=19) to get your tickets now.

We'll be doing a big tailgate before the match Saturday. Some of the
guys are cooking up smoked pulled pork and smoked chicken that will be
available for everyone. They'll be plenty of food and feel free to bring
things to contribute. Weather looks like it'll be great Saturday so
come out early as things should be going by 4:30!

Thanks to everyone that made the trip to Red Bull Arena, it was a great time. If you haven't already check out this article from MLSsoccer.com that includes some great quotes from the players: Crew recognize their traveling fans at Red Bull Arena (http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/crew-recognize-their-traveling-fans-red-bull-arena).

	Goalkeeper William Hesmer (http://www.mlssoccer.com/player/william-hesmer) credited
the Crew supporters for helping the team through some tough patches.

“I can’t put into words how much that means to us to have that type
of dedication from our fans,” he said. “When we see that commitment
and how passionate they are that’s inspiring. In a tough game like this
where we’re really clawing at the 80th, 90th
minute, their energy gave us a lot of help.”

More pics after the break...

What's the old adage, I'd rather be lucky than good? Sounds about right.
Thanks to a penalty drawn by Chad Marshall (and conversion by Guille)
the Crew are on their first win streak of the season with consecutive
home wins by late goals. Some complain the wins have lacked style while
others say good teams just find ways to get good results. With 4 of
the next 5 on the road I think we'll get a lot of answers about this
team before the break for the World Cup.

Big week this week as the Crew are on the road for games at New York on
Thursday for a game on ESPN2 and Sunday head west to Kansas City. As you
should all know by now we're doing our first weekday bus trip (and are
first to NY too!) on Thursday and will be joined by a number of others
making their own way to Harrison, NJ. If you're not heading to Red Bull
Arena Thursday then head down to Claddagh for the Crew Union viewing
party. Claddagh will also be the place to be for the 4pm match on
Sunday against the Wizards.

Hopefully we'll have some good pictures to share from the trip. You can
follow Crew Union on twitter (http://www.twitter.com/crewunion)
for updates from the road or with the hashtag #NorOnTour (http://search.twitter.com/search?q=%23NorOnTour)
(Nordecke on Tour).

The Crew along with all other teams in the 2010/11 CONCACAF Champions League will learn their fate next Wednesday,
May 19, when the tournament draw will set the Preliminary Round pairings
and Group Stage brackets.

Last year we were in the toughest group and still made it to the knockout stage, so it'll be interesting to see how the draw goes this time.

The Crew will play consecutive home games for the first time this season as they take on New England this Saturday before taking on Chivas on May 15th. The weather all though a bit chilly (forcast of 57 and windy Saturday) at least it will be dry. The kickoff at 7pm is a bit earlier since it's on FSC so come out earlier for the tailgate which should be going strong by 4 or so.

If you still need tickets please email Kevin (kmmc@crewunion.com) as soon as possible to make sure we have enough tickets. See everyone Saturday!

The Crew and Ohio State Buckeyes will once again meet on the field TONIGHT, in the ninth annual Connor Senn Memorial Match.
Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Jesse Owens
Memorial Stadium on the campus of Ohio State. Tickets for the
event are $5 for adults and $3 for children. In
addition to the exhibition match, the event features a silent auction
that consists of a wide array of Ohio State, Columbus Crew and Major
League Soccer memorabilia, including many autographed items, as well
donations from a variety of Columbus businesses and organizations.

The Crew supporter groups have put together an item for the silent auction you'll want to check out. Also, for those inteteested some of us will be doing a very informal tailgate (BEvERage only) before the match, look for a group of Crew fans or the big checkered flag.
