The Cold War is returning to Columbus Crew Stadium. On February 11th, the United States and Mexico will face off in the final round of World Cup Qualifying for the 2010 World Cup being hosted in South Africa. Back in 2001, Mexico came to the frigid fortress in Columbus and lost their nerve as the US team found an inspiring 2-0 victory on the road to the 2002 World Cup in South Korea & Japan. 2-0 was again the scoreline in the warmer weather match held in 2005 in Columbus when again the US beat Mexico on its way to qualifying for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

Polish Rifle Takes Charge |

Since 1996, Polish national teamer and former Everton midfielder Robert Warzycha has drawn a paycheck from the Columbus Crew. From 1996-2002 Robert, nicknamed the Polish Rifle for his freekicks, patrolled the Crew midfield. After the 2002 season Warzycha retired from soccer and joined the Crew coaching staff under Greg Andrulis. When Andrulis got sacked halfway through the 2005 season, Robert stepped up as the interim-coach until the end of the season.

After leading the Columbus Crew to the MLS Cup title and celebrating with the team, Sigi remained in California to attend to family matters and to think about his future with the Crew. Negotiations with the Crew stalled and Sigi finally landed an interview with the Seattle Sounders.
